The crowds came, and the seats filled.

Phoenix spent her days hydrating and her evenings performing. This was a busy time for Lance, who fulfilled many roles for Cillian, so Phoenix gave him the space to work. Backstage, he would wink at her with heat in his eyes, conveying his ongoing interest despite the hectic schedule. They had set a day and time for that elusive date, so she resolved to patiently wait.

Amidst her cycle of performances, she hadn’t spent any time with Gaston. Surely, the ghost would understand; he had, after all, been in show business himself. She’d researched his demise after hearing the story of Charles Goldberg and could finally put a face to the voice. The black and white newspaper photo at the New York Public Library for Performing Arts showed a broad-shouldered man with light hair and a square jaw. The gleaming smile contrasted with the tragedy that befell him.

Backstage, she slipped into her dress for the scene where Marie sings, “I Feel Pretty.”

Carrie straightened her hem. “When are you and Lance going to consummate this thing you’ve got going on?”

“Is it that obvious?”

Carrie rolled her eyes as she turned away to preen her hair in a nearby mirror. “The crowd can probably sense it.”

“We have a date tomorrow night.”

“The two of you have an undeniable sizzle. And you share a passion for theater. I hope it works out.” Her blue-eyed gaze darted to Phoenix then back to the mirror.

“Why do you say it like that?” Phoenix checked her own hair in the mirror.

“I don’t want to give up either of you if it doesn’t. He’s the best stage director I’ve ever worked with, and you’re my best friend.”

Phoenix tilted her head with a smile. “Don’t worry. I’ve been waiting a long time for Lance Hamilton. We both want a relationship.”

She swayed slightly, and Carrie stood with alarm on her face. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah, good.” The room, which had seemed to tilt, straightened. Maybe she hadn’t hydrated enough earlier that day. She could remedy that between scenes. A small voice in her mind reminded her that she’d had a few such spells over the last few days.

“Swooning at the thought of sir Lancelot?”

Phoenix managed a smile. “Something like that.”
